The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), took delivery of two aircrafts from the Presidency, on Monday, as President Muhammadu Buhari begins to fulfil his promise of reducing the presidential fleet, which he made prior to coming into office in 2015.

Last week, the President had indicated interest to sell off two aircrafts from the fleet, after criticisms continued to lacerate him for living large against his preaching of an austere disposition to governance.

At a ceremony in Abuja, on Monday the aircrafts were handed over to the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan Ali, by the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd).

The Minister was accompanied by Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, and other top military brass at the ceremony where the two aircrafts, the Augusta AW101 Very Important Personality (VIP) Helicopters were delivered.

Monguno, who said the gesture was to fulfil Buhari’s promise to reduce the amount of money being spent on the maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet, added that another two aircrafts, AW109 helicopter and a King Air Beechcraft in 2015, had earlier been released, to help enhance the operational capacity of the NAF to combat the current war against insurgency in the North East, adding that the committee set up by the Presidency on the approved sale of two other aircraft, a Falcon 7X and Hawker 4000 aircraft, would soon compete its assignment.

Explaining that the two aircrafts given to NAF on Monday, was equipped with ballistic defence capabilities and defensive aid suites against certain forms of missile attacks, Monguno assured that the President intended to strengthen to defeat the current threat.

Elated at the gesture, Abubakar, said the added aircrafts, would encourage NAF to focus on the fight against insurgency and militancy in the country, expressing enthusiasm over the government’s decision to provide new platforms and funds, which he said was responsible for the successes recorded against the Boko Haram in the North East by the Air Force in recent times.

Explaining that the aircrafts would be reconfigured and deployed for tactical airlift of troops and logistics in support of combat operations, he said that while one of the aircrafts would be configured as an air ambulance with a trauma unit, the other would be used as a carrier for troops.
