A totally scandalised Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed, has urged Nigerians to be in fervent prayers over the situation in the Nigerian judiciary.

Speaking against the background of weekend’s onslaught against the third arm of the government, which saw the Department of State Services (DSS), storming the homes of some judges and spiriting them into detention, on account of alleged corruption, also urged calm.

He said that the National Judicial Council (NJC), the body created for the appointment and discipline of judges in Nigeria, would discuss the matter and come out with a comprehensive response on Tuesday.

Touching on the matter at a valedictory court session held in honour of retiring Justice Suleiman Galadima (of the Supreme Court), Mohammed described the development as “saddening and unfortunate.”

Hear him: “My Lords, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen, not to distract from this occasion, it is indeed very saddening and deeply regrettable, the distressing and unfortunate incident, which occurred on Friday, 7th October and Saturday 8th October, 2016.

“However, I must ask all Nigerians to remain calm and prayerful, as an emergency meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC) will take place tomorrow, will comprehensively look into the matter.

“Furthermore, I must express my sincere appreciation to the executive of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), ably led by the President, Abubakar B. Mahmud (SAN) and indeed, all members of the legal profession for their prompt action and continued support.”

The operatives, had in a simultaneous operation in Abuja and Port Harcourt, stormed the homes of the affected judges, but were prevented from arresting their target in the Rivers State capital, due to the intervention of the Governor Nyesom Wike, who told them that they could not carry out such an operation at odd hours.
