Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris

Fleeing father of the boy in chain Korede Taiwo, found in a room at a church in Ogun State, who was rescued by a contingent of both the police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCD) men, is to face an attempted murder charge, soon, the police said on Monday.

They gave the indication, while stating that office of wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun, had also to specify its interest to wade into the matter and ensure that justice is done while seeing to the welfare of the victim.

Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesman for Ogun Stat Police Command, while giving snippets of the progress of the case, which shopped the Nigerian public and beyond since it was blown open, said a cordon has also been thrown around to bring in all those associated one way or the other to the incident.

He said the fleeing Francis Taiwo who chained the boy under the guise of stealing habit and being possessed was arrested with the aid of members of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Odo Ota, alongside the step mother of the boy, who would not be detained, because she is still nursing a baby.

Scenes during the rescue

Giving details of investigation so far, he said that the young boy’s mother, whose name was given as Maureen, said to have hailed from Delta State, left the father in 2007 after Korede was born after three previous kids.

Maureen is said to have since died, leaving behind four children, none of whom were living with the husband, reportedly the pastor in the church where the victim was chained, who had gone ahead to marry other women at different times.

The police spokesman, told Channels Television on Sunrise Daily that the arrested pastor, who claimed that he was called to his ministry vocation in 2012, hailed from Benin Republic and had lived in Ota, Ogun State for a long time.

He added: “None of the three wives apart from Kehinde Taiwo, the present wife is living with him and none of Korede’s siblings is still staying with this man. He gave them to various people to take care for him, which is another issue entirely.

“The matter will be transferred to department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence today. We have a special unit. People have interest especially the office of the Ogun State First Lady, which called our office yesterday to say that the government has interest. And of course, the best thing we can do is to hand over this baby to the office of Women Affairs and Social Development for proper welfare.

“Of course, the matter will be charged to court. We are not happy about it. It is very unfortunate that issues will come up and we experience issues like this in our polity. Nobody has supported the pastor for what he has done. Everybody has condemned the pastor even including the members of the church.

“The AIG in charge of Ogun State, who is in charge, because the new CP has not taken over, has condemned that and has given his words that the man be properly investigated and taken to court for what he has done.

“To me, I don’t think it is mere case of child abuse. It is a case of attempted murder, because if you see the weight of the chain around the neck of this boy, coupled with the weight of the padlock; the boy couldn’t stand for hours until we gave him proper medical attention. He could not stand. The legs were weak, until we gave him proper medical attention. If he had stayed for another week, probably the boy would have given up.

“So, it is just unfortunate. We’re going to handle the case properly to serve as deterrent to others. This is what people are suffering. Many young people are passing through things and nobody speaks out. As Fela would say, it is suffering and smiling. People like to suffer and smile and won’t want to inform the police. And this is how we promote the culture of impunity. This happen because they believe when they do it, they can go scot-free because as part of our culture and tradition, we like to keep quiet on issues like this.

“The step mother said she wanted to talk. She said she had been begging the father and she said the father didn’t want to listen to her. That one is subject to investigation as well. As a responsible security institution, the command will do the needful to make sure there is justice in the matter and to make sure that this case serves as deterrent to parents and guardians who may want to indulge into something like this.”
