Attempts to keep Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff away from assuming duties at the Wadata Plaza headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), finally came to naught on Monday, as he has finally taken full charge.

Sheriff, is contesting his removal as the National Chairman of the party, the outcome of its National Convention in Port Harcourt on May 21, when some party leaders, raised a caretaker committee, headed by former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi, to take charge of the leadership pending an elective convention at a later date.

Sheriff, who was the undisputed National Chairman up until the convention, had cancelled the event a day before, citing a court order, which allegedly barred the party from holding the convention and since then has continued to lay claim to its leadership.

Last week however, both the PDP Board of Trustees, and the Senator Ibrahim Mantu-Prof. Jerry Gana faction, which held its own edition in Abuja on the same day of the Port Harcourt convention, had teamed up with virtually all the members of the National Working Committee, which worked with Sheriff to hand over the affairs of the party to Makarfi and his team.

But Sheriff, stormed the Wadata Plaza early Monday morning to take over the same secretariat, where last week’s event took place and despite initially being barred by a contingent of policemen and other security officials, eventually gained access to the office later in the afternoon.

He was said to have left the Zone 5 headquarters of the party to Louis Edet House, headquarters of the Nigerian Police, where he met with the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, with his lawyers, where he made available copies of court orders which gave him power to remain in office.

The ousted National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, on Monday staged a dramatic return to the national secretariat of the party to resume official duties.

He later told reporters why he decided to make a come-back to the office, saying, his action was in du consultations with “serious minded” stakeholders of the party his lawyers, saying since he was a law-abiding citizen, he would not take any action that would overreach the law.

His words: “I have remained committed to lawful procedures, I have come, fully armed with all the necessary court orders to resume as national chairman, as directed by a court of competent jurisdiction.

“As we settle down to move the party forward, we wish to call on all party members within and outside the country to come around so that we can together reposition the PDP for future challenges.

“We have to this served the necessary court orders on the Independent National Electoral Commission which is the impartial arbiter in matters like this, the police as custodians of the law and we will make same available to you gentlemen of the press, so that you can make informed analysis of the issues involved. We hereby seek your own cooperation as we continue the task of re-engineering the PDP.

“I wish to use this opportunity to thank all those who stood on the side of the truth and the law, and wish to place on record that never again shall the PDP return to wallow in lawlessness and impunity.”

The caretaker committee is alien to the constitution of our great party. And even if there was the need, it ought to have been decided with the National Chairman of the party presiding. Those who took the decision are not known to law as party officials. Against this backdrop, I hereby declare as null, void and of no consequence whatsoever, any action taken by any person or group of persons, except by my leadership which is recognised by law.”
