Intrigues, bickering, as PDP sacks Sheriff, appoints Makarfi N'Chairman

Intrigues, bickering and manoeuvring and even backstabbing, played out once again as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), moves to chart a new course to bounce back to power, after losing it last year.

It all culminated to the eventual sacking of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff and both members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

It was a day Sheriff himself put off the National Convention of the party, which was supposed to hold in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, citing several court orders seeking to stop the exercise.

Whilst the Port Harcourt drama was going on, another set of PDP chieftains, was also in Abuja, claiming authenticity to the leadership of the party, and in the process, choosing their own national officers.

However, the Port Harcourt exercise, overrode Sheriff's decision to put off the convention and went ahead to conclude it, with former Niger State Governor, explaining that Sheriff lacked the powers to cancel the convention.

A motion for the dissolution of the Sheriff’s leadership, was moved by Austin Opara, former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, and seconded by Emeka Ihedioha, the immediate past deputy speaker of the house of representatives.

The motion was ratified by Nyesom Wike, Rivers state governor and chairman of the convention holding at Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Wike, while clarifying the position of the new PDP apparatchik, said under no condition would the officers selected on the ad-hoc basis seek offices during the convention they were mandated to put together.

Hear him: “Please I want you to know that you have been appointed to organise the next convention, not to contest in the election. You cannot contest for any office. This is very important.”

Makarfi, who expressed surprise at his choice to lead the party, thanked the members for trusting him for the new role, saying the assignment, which he saw as a challenge, came to him unaware.

Pledging that the party would not regret the choice it had made in him leading it for the next three months, he said it would be all about service and returning it to its original prime status in order to take back power.

His words: “Honestly, I lack word to express my pleasure. What you may not know is that I didn’t expect this. The bag I came here with is still in the car. I just arrived and I was told that there was a meeting holding at Government House, Port Harcourt. So, I rushed there and people started approaching me asking: ‘If you are called upon to serve, will you be willing and ready to serve?’

“And I said if it is in the support of the unity of our party, progress of our country, no matter the kind of job I am asked to do, once it is legitimate, I will offer myself.”

On the other hand Sheriff, while announcing the suspension of the party’s national convention told reporters on Saturday, at the Conference Room of the Le Meridien Hotel, Port Harcourt, that there were currently three court orders issued against the party convention.

“We want to be seen as a law-abiding party,” Mr. Sheriff said, reading from a prepared text. We will ask the delegates to go home.”

In Abuja, the organisers of another convention, also took a recourse to the court orders, saying their own exercise was not for the purpose of electing new officers, adding that the former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, would continue to lead the party pending when new offers are elected.

Mantu, who said that a group of founding fathers and elders of the party, decided to organise a parallel national convention in order to restore it to the path of integrity, added that they were mindful of their roles as elders of the PDP, having reviewed recent events in the party and came to the “painful conclusion that the culture of impunity, disdain for democratic norms and utter disregard” for the constitution of the PDP” which he said led to the defeat of the party in 2015 are “rearing their ugly head again.”

“Therefore, all actions of the Ali Modu Sheriff led executive including the purported congresses and convention in Port Harcourt are null and void and an exercise in illegality,” he said.
