SWAN to Oliseh: Name journalists who demanded money within seven days

Super Eagles trainer, Sunday Oliseh, may have escaped the big hammer of his boss, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), which refused to sack him, as popularly demanded in some quarters, but not so from a major stakeholder, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), the house of journalists covering sports in Nigeria.

For directly accusing some members of the association of asking him for money for them to write favourable reports about him, the group demanded that he must name the journalists involved, and must do so within one week.

Oliseh, had incurred the wrath of many Nigerians including the NFF, when he released a video on Monday, where he dubbed those criticised his job, especially his failure to do well in this year’s CHAN as insane, had also upbraided sportswriters of demanding for graft to elicit favourable stories.

His job was said to have been practically saved by Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, who reportedly stepped in to stop the NFF from dispatching a termination letter it had originally prepared to punish the Super Eagles handler for his loose talks, in spite of a said apology, which it felt was not enough to wash him.

The Minister, who was quoted in the Sun, a Nigerian tabloid as urging the football house to reconsider its decision, after he was said to have been reached on the matter, reportedly reasoned that it would be counterproductive for such a prompt measure to be handed down given what was at stake in the near future.

“Oliseh’s insult to Nigerians had infuriated many and the NFF executives were saddened with the action of the coach and despite his apology had resolved to relieve him of the job. However, the saving grace for Oliseh is that the minister felt otherwise when he was briefed by the NFF leadership. The minister does not believe Oliseh should be sacked because his team lost out in the first round of CHAN 2016,” the source was quoted as saying.

Regardless, SWAN, which appears unwilling to let the matter ride, in a statement signed by its national secretary Andrew Abba stated that Oliseh must come up with the names of the sportswriters involved.

“He has seven days within which to come up with the names as SWAN will not fold its arm and allow any frustrated coach to blame her members for his misfortune,” the statement added.
