It was a pitiful sight when spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh stepped out of the Black Maria at the premises of the Federal High Court Abuja, on Tuesday, in handcuffs.

This was the first time in recent times when a suspect is being so treated in virtually all the corruption cases involving high-profile Nigerians, including politicians, who have been similarly accused since the inception of the EFCC, more than 10 years ago.

Nobody seems to know why such a special treatment was given to the PDP spokesman, in what seems novel and has not happened again since the public outrage that accompanied a similar one meted out to former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Tarfa Balogun, during the time of former EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu.

It was at the same court, where he was remanded in Kuje prison by Justice Okon Abang, last week, in a case of fraud and money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Metuh was accused of collecting N400million from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, for an undisclosed reasons and first detained at the commission’s facilities in Abuja, for about two weeks, before finally being charged to court.

Metuh is back in the court to argue for his bail, which was not taken last week, because the EFCC objected to an oral application, because it was not usual for the Federal High Court, being a court of records, to allow oral applications.

However, on resumption of the court session, counsel to Metuh, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), had asked the court to stand down the trial, to give opportunity to the lead counsel, Mr. Chris Uche, said to be attending to another matter at the Supreme Court, appear in person to make the bail argument.

Abang granted the plea, for 45 minutes since the application was not challenged by the EFCC, ordering all the parties to return by 1pm.
