One of the major bones hanging in the throat of South East governors, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and other stakeholders, is how to get leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu out of detention, as they meet again this Sunday afternoon.

That is if they eventually meet, given the discordant vibes and lukewarm attitude coming from some of the stakeholders who are supposed to be in attendance, as quite a number believe that it would be an exercise in futility.

Even as some top members of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation are claiming that they were not part of any meeting. “I don’t know of any meeting. I was not invited,” was how former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, put it on Sunday morning, when asked about his position on the parley.

Whirlwindnews.com, gathered nonetheless that one of the issues in the agenda of the meeting is the possibility of sending a delegation to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari to request for the release of Kanu in order to calm frayed nerves.

A source close to the meeting, informed that the stakeholders realise the difficulty in assuaging the youth restiveness currently raving through the South East and South South parts of the country with Kanu still in detention. “There is no way you could ask these young men and women to leave the street without releasing their leader. We all know this. But how to go about doing it is the problem,” he said.

Pressed further on what the options were, he added that it could entail meeting with the President to impress it upon him that continuing to ignore the issue would be counterproductive and not in the interest of the country.

Hear him: “With people like (Rochas) Okorocha who we believe can reach the President, we can make the case with the President. You know the saying that if you want to send a message to the heavens, you do it through the smoke. No doubt, this is a delicate issue. There are a lot of tendencies and mind-sets. But this is no time for people to continue to dig in on their positions.

Biafran agitators

“No matter what you may think, all the sides to this issue are very strategic and important. There is no way the President can succeed without a section of this country and even two sections, as it were, because the South South is also part of this. Yes, you may say that there are some of them that will not have anything to do with the idea of Biafra. But you can also see that many of them want to be part of it. Just like you have in the South East. Not all Igbo people are part of it. So, it is a fluid situation, which you must deal with.

“Again, on the other side, you must recognise the fact that Buhari is the President. You must also realise that his disposition to the Biafran idea, given that he was one of the commanders who put it down is a major factor in the way he handles the matter. Added to this is the fact that he may see the agitation as an expression of the hatred of Ndigbo for him, especially with what happened in the last election. This makes the whole thing more delicate.”

South- East governors, had met on November 17 in Enugu and resolved to convene an enlarged South East stakeholders meeting this Sunday, afternoon, November 22, with Okorocha, Imo State Governor, saying after the November 17 meeting, that the forum needed to ensure lasting peace in the zone and so had decided to consult widely with Ohanaeze, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, traditional rulers, development unions, the clergy and other stakeholders.

In furtherance to this, the South-east governors scheduled an emergency meeting of stakeholders on Sunday Nov. 22, 2015 at Enugu. Attendance at the emergency meeting will include all National Assembly members, ministers from the zone and other invited stakeholders from the zone”, Okorocha said.
