It was a harrowing experience for South East-bound passengers, as they were hit by the effects of the #EndSARS protests, currently sweeping across the country.

For more than seven hours, hundreds of vehicles conveying countless number of passengers as well as private vehicle owners, were forced to remain in one place, as the protesters blocked Benin-Lagos expressway, reputed to be the busiest road in Africa.

The protesters camped at Ugbowo in front of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), where they sang and danced from the music blasting from the sound system mounted on the newly-constructed pedestrian bridge in front of the main campus of the university, with policemen, stood helpless while watching the scenario.

Explaining the reason for their action, President of UNIBEN Students’ Union Government (SUG), Benjamin Egwu, said: “More graduates and other intellectuals should be encouraged to join the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, should be a role model to other African countries and we must always get it right. Give Nigerians a reformed police.”

One of the travellers, Osarobo, however, stated he decided to join the protesters to demands an end to police brutality and lawlessness.

Osarobo said: “Although, I may be stranded but I am not frustrated, because the reforms in the police are long overdue.

“End must come to policemen moving innocent Nigerians to ATM (Automated Teller Machine) points or the use of POS (Point of Sale) machines by policemen to force their victims to part with their hard-earned money. Policemen and women should also be well paid.”
