MC Oluomo

Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo Chairman of the National Union of the Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State has denied reports involvement in the violent attacks against the #EndSARS protesters in Lagos on Thursday.

The Punch quotes spokesman of the NURTW boss , Jimoh Buhari, as saying that his boss did not sponsor the incident, where armed youths attempted to disrupt the protest, which has been going for some days now.

He said: “We have no hand in the attacks. People should stop accusing us wrongly. Were the thugs wearing NURTW uniforms? Is MC Oluomo holding a political office? He has no hand in the case.”

The Nation, in its own report, also quoted NURTW boss as saying: “Today being the anniversary of my first year in office, I deliberately cancelled the idea of celebration due to the situation in the country and to lend my support to the protest.

“As a good citizen who abhors anything violence, I wonder how people will link me with the violence that took place in Alausa.

“I always warn my people not to involve in violence and whoever does, I will personally hand over the person to the security agency.

“I didn’t send anyone to disrupt or attack the #EndSARS protesters. We all want the police force to be reformed. We all want better welfare for our police officers.

“We all want our police officers to stand shoulder to shoulder with their counterparts in any part of the world. This will definitely translate to security of lives of our people in the country.”

Buhari was also quoted as saying that members of the union were also victims of police extortion and it would therefore be unwise of them to thwart a protest that seeks to bring an end to police brutality.

Giving an inklng into what might have led to the attack, the paper also quoted another member of the NURTW, as saying that the heavy traffic caused by the protesters was affecting their livelihoods.

He said: “On a normal day, I do 10 trips. Since these protests started, I have had to reduce my trips to five. It is worse that we are burning fuel and our buses are not operating at full capacity because of the COVID-19 protocol.

“Long hours in traffic cause fuel to burn faster and we are losing money due to no fault of ours. So, some boys decided that it was time to get these protesters off the roads.”
