Boko Haram

Katsina Governor Aminu Masari has said government would not allow the insecurity in the Northwest and North-Central to escalate to the status of Boko Haram terrorism in the Northeast.

Masari, who spoke on a day the US warned that the Al-Qaeda insurgent group had started penetrating the North-Western part of Nigeria, told State House Correspondents after a meeting with President Muhmmadu Buhari on Wednesday that such an outcome would not be allowed.

Dagvin Anderson, commander of the US special operations command, Africa, had said  at a media briefing that Al-Qaeda was actually making inroads into both the North West and North Central, at the same time they were expanding to other parts of West Africa.

“We have engaged with Nigeria and continue to engage with them in intel sharing and in understanding what these violent extremists are doing,” he said.

“And that has been absolutely critical to their engagements up in the Borno state and into an emerging area of northwest Nigeria that we’re seeing al-Qaida starting to make some inroads in.

“So, this intelligence sharing is absolutely vital and we stay fully engaged with the government of Nigeria to provide them an understanding of what these terrorists are doing, what Boko Haram is doing, what ISIS-West Africa is doing, and how ISIS and al-Qaida are looking to expand further south into the littoral areas,” he was quoted as saying.

But Masari, informed that serious efforts were already on to ensure that banditry, kidnapping and all sorts of other criminal activities bedevelling the Northwest and the Northcentral are brought to an end.

He said though some communities in nine council areas of Katsina State had been affected negatively by the activities of bandits and other criminals, agricultural yields would still come out well.
