Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbo, has replied Mamman Daura that the Nigeria’s President in 2023 should be based on competence and not “turn-by-turn,” saying it was unfortunate that he should toe that path at this time in the political development of the country.

Daura, nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari believed to be the power behind the throne at the Presidency, had made the declaration in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday.

But in a quick riposte, less than 24 hours, the President General of Ohanaeze, Nnia Nwodo, described the comment on Wednesday, as unfortunate, insisting that the Igbo should have a shot at the nation’s number one job to complete the balance in the spirit of justice, equity and fairplay.

The Ohanaeze boss, who conveyed his position through his spokesman, Emeka Attamah, stressed that it was unfair for Daura to seek an end to “rotation” after Buhari and the northern region had enjoyed two terms in quick succession.

His words: “The truth is that Mamman Daura is not being a fair judge. Then, he didn’t believe rotation should end. Now that he has tasted power through Buhari, rotation can end and the most qualified/competent can be voted in, discountenancing that the South East has never tasted what he is drooling in? The law of equity demands that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

“By the way, who determines the most qualified/competent candidate? Is it as competent as the last one they gave the nation? It is indisputably the turn of the South, specifically the South East.”
