It is all becoming too clear that the North would not respect the zoning arrangement its Southern counterpart is basing to hope of power returning to the region of the country, in 2023 going by the views of Mamman Daura, considered one of the most powerful voice in the country at the moment.

Daura, nephew to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is touted to be the power behind the throne, in a rare interview he granted the Hausa Service of the BBC, said Nigeria should produce its leader from any parts of the country.

In a suggestion, which is being interpreted as the thinking of the President himself, given their closeness, he argued that since Nigerians had tried the rotational presidency on three occasion, it would be better to go for the most qualified candidate in 2023 irrespective of whether he comes from the North or the South.

Insisting that this would be the best for the country, Daura, who said it was the best way to maintain its unity also clarified on other aspects of the polity, including his relationship with the President.

“Rotation has been done once, twice and three times; it is important that this nation is united as one; the most qualified/competent should be elected and not someone who comes from a particular zone,” he told his interviewer.

Regarding his relationship with Buhari, including growing up together, he said: “Yes, he is my uncle; he is my father’s younger brother. My father is the first born of their mother and General Buhari is the last. It is true that we were together as youths. Yes, I usually go and visit and offer advice. If he asks me, I offer advice, but I don’t just go and tell him what to do; you don’t do that with the government.”
