Two former governors, John Odigie Oyegun and Adams Oshiomhole are leading the way to ensure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) returns to power in Edo State in 2022, after the September 19, 2020 governorship election

Oyegun and Oshiomhole, incidentally, were chairmen of the party at various times, with the latter thrown out of office unceremoniously recently following last Thursday’s dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC), which he was heading before the Court of Appeal Abuja upheld the ruling of a lower court, sanctioning his suspension as a member of the party.

It is however not clear in what capacity Oshiomhole would be acting, since one of the basis for his losing his position as the APC boss, was his suspension from the APC, by his Etsako ward in Edo State, last year.

Regardless, Oshiomhole was named in a 49-member campaign committee to elect Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who is the party’s new choice for the office after disqualifying incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, who won his election on its platform in 2016.

Incidentally Oyegun, whose displacement by Oshiomhole at as the helmsman at the 40 Brantyre Crescent, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja headquarters of the party, in 2018, had left both of them bitter political enemies, would be working with the former two-term Edo governor.

It is unclear how this would pan out given the fact that Oyegun, first civilian governor of Edo State during the ill-fated transition period of former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, was himself a staunch supporter of Obaseki and had warned of dire consequences at the treatment he received in the hands of Oshiomhole, believed to be responsible for his disqualification.

A statement on Thursday by Yekini Nabena, APC deputy spokesman, which named members of the committee it would be headed by Governor of Kano State Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano governor, as chairman, with Hope Uzodinma, Imo governor, as the deputy.

Other members, included: Ovie Omo-Agege, deputy senate president; Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe governor; Yahaya Bello, Kogi governor; Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor; Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Sokoto senator; Godswill Akpabio, minister of Niger Delta affairs; Orji Uzor Kalu, senate chief whip;Rochas Okorocha, former Imo governor; Timipre Sylva.

Pius Odubu, Degi Eremiemyo Biobaraku, Oserheimen A. Osunbor, Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, John Owan Enoh, E.J. Agbonayiman, Babachir Lawal, B.B. Apugo, Charles Airhiavbere, Peter Akpatason, Patrick Alsowleren, Johnson Oghuma, Julius Ihonvbere and Pally Iriase also made the list.

Others were: Dennis Idahosa, Rachel Akpabio, Bolaji Afeez, Gabriel Iduseri, Cairo Ojougboh, Patrick Obahiagbon, Ayiri Emami, Abubakar Adagu Suberu, Usman Nahuche, Chidi Orji, Almajiri Giadam, Sa’idu Umar Kumo, Pius Akinyelure, Chris Ogiemwonyi, Solomon Edebiri, Ebegue Amadasun, Saturday Uwulekue, Osaro Obaze, Samuel Ogbuku, Rinsola Abiola, Theresa Tekenel and Abbas Braimoh made the list.

“This followed the approval for the constitution of a National Campaign Council for the 19th September, 2020 Governorship Election, by the National Chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee, H.E. Mai Mala Buni. The campaign council will be inaugurated on Monday, 6th July 2020 at the party’s national secretariat,” Nabena, said.
