Plumtree High School Student`s Hall was on Thursday afternoon gutted down by fire which caused extensive damage to the building.

The fire, whose cause could not be immediately established, razed the entire roof of the building.

The Beit Hall was locked at the time the fire started and the fire brigade had to break in to gain access to put out the fire.

The school is currently being used as a COVID-19 quarantine centre for Zimbabwean nationals who are being deported from Botswana.

No one was injured during the incident.

Councillor for Ward 2 Fanisani Dube, told CITE that investigations are yet to be done to ascertain the cause of the fire and to assess the amount of damage caused.

“The fire started around 2pm, just after lunch. There was no one in the building and the entrance was locked. When the fire brigade came to put out the fire they had to break into the hall,” said Cllr Dube.

When a CITE news crew, arrived at the school, the Plumtree fire brigade was battling to put out the fire.

The fire fighting team made several trips back and forth to collect more water and their efforts were being hampered by leaking hoses.

The Bulawayo Fire Brigade had to be dispatched to assist in putting out the raging inferno.

In 2018, a double storey hostel at the same school was also destroyed by fire.
