For Susan Idoko Okpe, the much-touted “Benue COVID-19 index case,” a harrowing experience in the hands of officials of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday, following her eventual release from a 58-day detention from isolation.

The details of her release, after crying out repeatedly that she was not a COVID-19 case, are still sketchy, but her daughter confirmed the cheering news through her social media platform on Wednesday evening.

This is coming four days after the London-based Okpe, who came in to bury her father, but allegedly snatched at a hospital in her home, Benue State on account of having the dreaded virus, threatened to go to court to secure her freedom, from the Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), facility, where she had been isolated since her ordeal started.

Many Nigerians had also raised their voices on her behalf following her continuous protest that she did not have the virus and accused Nigerian and Benue State authorities of manipulating the facts of her case and detaining her illegally.

Earlier on Wednesday, her children joined in the open campaign to see their mother released, appealing to the NCDC to free her from 58-day detention in separate posts via their Instagram pages and appealing to Nigerians to help.

“She’s been released,” her daughter announced happily on her page, on Wednesday, using the same platform.
