I was standing and falling while sleeping for three days, was the strange story 49-year old man, Ikechukwu Atansi, adduced for not alerting the world in his narrative to the police in Akwa, at the weekend, over the death of him two-month-old pregnant wife.

Amid the allegation that he was the culprit in the murder of the pretty woman, Atansi, denied the allegation, telling the police that he actually did not see those who killed his wife and did not alert anybody because he slept for three days after the incident.

“I didn’t call the police because I slept for three days. I couldn’t stand up. I was just standing and falling, standing and falling. I latter was able to alert my neighbours to help me contact the police,” he told his interrogators at the police headquarters in the Anambra State capital.

Asked by his interrogators why he did not contact his in-laws thereafter to inform them of the incident, Atansi, who spoke in Igbo, said it was because he had a low battery in his phone and could not make use of it, hence he had to ask his neighbours for help to charge it, and by the time his in-laws finally arrived, the police had already waded into the matter and taken him awa.

But the police, which appeared not impressed by the narrative, accused the 49-year-old of carrying out the murder, at his home, saying there were visible mark of violence on the body of the victim, aged 31.

Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed who confirmed the incident said the Central Police Station Awka received a distress call at about 8:30am on Thursday March 26, about an unusual odour coming out from Atansi’s room.

On arrival at the scene, a decomposing body of a woman, later identified as Mrs Uchechi Atansi aged 31 years, was spotted by the operatives when they gained access into the apartment.

“Marks of violence was observed on the body of the victim and blood spilled all over the room was admitted as evidence when detectives analyzed the scene,” the police said, in a statement.”

Haruna further said:“Surprisingly, however, the deceased husband one Mr Ikechukwu Atansi aged 49 years of Umudum village in Isuanochia was right inside the room with the deceased when the door was opened and could not give a satisfactory account of what actually transpired.

“Instead, the husband claimed that he was injected with a substance by unknown persons who must have killed his wife.

“The husband was subsequently arrested and he is assisting the Police with useful information to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Upon being interrogated, the suspect who lives in Umueze Village in Amawbia community claimed he slept for three days without knowing what happened to him.

“According to him, it was during that time some unknown persons came in and killed his wife. Atansi also gave an excuse of not communicating with anyone at that time because his phone’s battery was dead.

“The Commissioner of Police Mr. John B.Abang has ordered for immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal investigation department(CID) Awka for discreet investigation.”
