Remo Protest

A bloody confrontation on Monday, between protesters and policemen, over Saturday’s killing of Remo Star footballer, Kazeem Tiaminu, by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), has left five persons dead, The Nation, is reporting.

This is coming as Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, who had earlier called for calm among the people, confirmed that the policeman allegedly responsible for the tragic incident, has been arrested on his orders.

The victims, included two policemen, were feared killed during the protest involving hundreds of protesters including women and children, who flooded streets in Sagamu, Ogun State to register their anger over the death of the footballer.

Tiamiyu, a player with Remo Star Football Club, was killed on Saturday after policemen attached to the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) arrested him on allegations of being a Yahoo Boy.

The protesters, who took to the streets, including the palace of Akarigbo and the Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, demanding justice for the deceased, condemned incessant brutality and indiscriminate arrests by law enforcement agents in the town and its environs.

It was gathered that apart from Daniel, a member of the House of Representatives representing Remo Federal Constituency, Mrs Adewunmi Onanuga, and the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Funmi Efuwape, were at the palace to appeal to the people.

Confirming the arrest of the SARS operative, the governor, wrote on his confirmed Twitter page: “As at this morning, I can confirm that the perpetrator has since been arrested, as directed by me.”

The governor assured that the matter would not be treated ‘lightly’, adding that his administration’s priority was “to ensure a safe and secure society.”
