Son of Ghana’s first President Dr. Sekou Nkrumah has said the overthrow of his father ( Kwame Nkrumah) in military coup d’état on 24th February 1966 is justifiable

Making his controversial view known on Facebook, Sekou Nkrumah argues that the introduction of a one-party state in 1964 by Nkrumah’s government can be a good enough reason for which he was eventually overthrown.

“Unfortunately the 1966 coup can be justified because of the introduction of the one-party state in 1964!” He asserted.

However, he concedes that his father remains a political icon who will remain celebrated by Africans in the foreseeable future.

“But, and there is a big but here, Kwame Nkrumah is a political icon who will continue to be celebrated by Africans for many years to come,” he added.

Nkrumah’s overthrow is seen by many as the beginning of the woes of Ghana given the transformation of the country under his leadership.
Dr Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 in a coup led by EK Kotoka, AA Afrifa and JA Ankrah.

Army officers Colonel E.K. Kotoka, Major A.A. Afrifa, Lieutenant General (retired) J.A. Ankrah, and Police Inspector General J.W.K. Harlley, who led the overthrow justified their takeover by charging the CPP administration with abuse and corruption and a lack of democratic principles.
