Crowd booing the President

President Muhammadu Buhari arrived Maiduguri, Borno State early Wednesday to a hostile audience, who booed and jeered at him, urging him to return to where he came from, as he was not needed in the state.

If the President’s direct flight into the state, straight from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian headquarters of the African Union (AU), where he has been attending meeting since last week, was to soothe the frayed nerves and console the grieving residents, it seemed to have backfired, as the people appeared in no mood for such niceties.

The state has been in deep mourning since the Sunday night’s strike by Boko Haram terrorists, which killed some 30 persons in Aun, a suburb of Maiduguri, the state capital, in a manner that got the Governor Babagana Zulum of the state seething with anger against the military, whomhe blamed for the carnage.

Obviously in the same foul mood, the people instead of cheering, booed the President, as his convoy made its way through the streets, shouting: Bama so! Bamayi! which translates to “We don’t want; we’re not interested.”

Borno is a stronghold of the president. During his previous visits to the state, crowds lined up on the streets, chanting “Sai baba!”

Commenting on the hostile reception that Buhari got on Wednesday, a Twitter user wrote:

“If what I’ve been hearing from the people welcoming President Buhari to Maiduguri is all but to judge, then the people of Borno are not happy. Just an opposite of his earlier Visits. “Bama so” “Bamayi!” This is really serious. There must be a change of strategy in Fighting BH.”

Regardless, the President, met with leaders of the state during a condolence visit to Zulum and Borno elders at the  palace of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-Kanemi.
