Obiano and Pope

The recent admittance of Anambra State Governor into the prestigious Knight Commander of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great (KCSG), by Pope Francis, is currently being mired in controversy, as issues have cropped up as to whether the governor cheated the process.

Reports early Friday morning indicated that though the Catholic Pontiff actually conferred the governor with the title, he was never decorated, before he (Obiano) beat the gun by decorating himself, therefore, circumventing the process and deceiving the public.

According to Elombah.com, an online newspaper, Obiano, “shocked” stakeholders, when they learnt that there was no Papal investiture by the Pope in Rome, as he claimed by appearing in the official regalia of the KCSG.

However, in a swift riposte, the governor’s camp went for the jugular, dismissing the report as fake from the stable of a known undertaker and a hireling, who had established himself in “voodoo journalism.”

The report, had said: While it is true the Pope has granted him Papal Knighthood, but there was no investiture by the Pope. Obiano simply had audience with the Pope wearing the Papal cloth that was made for him by the Gammarelli in Rome and started splashing the pictures all over the net.

“If you noticed, no Papal knight in Nigeria has congratulated him, because they are aware of his 419, but in other not to escalate the scandal Obiano has caused to the mother Church, they are handling it maturely.

“Our investigations also reveal that his Local Ordinary and the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Dr. Valeria Okeke, was actually the person that applied the Papal knighthood for him on Obiano’s request and not that the Pope gave it to him for any reason.

“But did you see Obiano’s people suggesting that it was a direct grant from the Pope. However, the Archdiocese and Vatican Embassy in Nigeria are not aware of the drama at Rome. What then drove him to such action?

“Our investigations also reveal that if a pope wants to personally perform investiture ceremony, that the persons Bishop or his representatives would attend the ceremony but that in Obiano’s case he just travelled for picnic to Rome with over 250 persons.

“Apart from a few that followed him to Papal audience, the rest were asked to remain in their hotel rooms. The Archdiocese and the association of Papal Knights in Nigeria are not aware of the so called investiture.”

The governor, while conveying his disdain through his spokesman, practically spat at the report, saying it was not even worth replying, but for the interest of the public who could be swayed by the inherent falsehood.

He said: “We read with horror, a story published by Elombah News, an online media undertaker where it was insinuated that the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano was not conferred with the papal knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great on Wednesday January 15, 2020 as was widely reported.

“In the story, the publisher of the online bulletin, a certain Daniel Elombah, made frantic efforts to convince his readers that  Governor Obiano had a mere audience with the Pope in Rome and that no knighthood was conferred on him.

“Ordinarily, we would have ignored Elombah who has become widely known for his unprofessional approach to journalism but there is a grave danger of leaving some unsuspecting readers to assume that Elombah’s voodoo journalism may be right if it is left challenged.

“Indeed, it is a sign of pathetic mental illness for anyone to suggest that the Holy Pontiff and the entire College of Cardinals that support him as well as the Local Ordinaries who certified Obiano for the honour, can be so easily deceived or bought over with money by anyone and to insinuate that the Governor of Anambra State can even dream of anything so heinous. This is pure delirium!

“The incontrovertible truth is that the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano was duly invested with the honour of the Knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great. Anyone who wishes to validate this assertion can conduct an independent inquiry with the Vatican Authorities.

“It must be noted though that over the past six years, Governor Obiano has demonstrated unrivalled capacity to absorb criticism and take the most bizarre attacks in his strides. However, alleging that the governor’s recent Papal Knight investiture is a fraud is the worst form of profanity that can come from an opposition camp funded by a former governor who is also a Papal Knight.

“Every man and woman of conscience should condemn Daniel Elombah and the shadowy characters goading him with loads of cash for calling the integrity of the Holy See to question and for casting profanity on the ancient rites and traditions of the Catholic Church.

“Elombah and his sponsors should be reminded that there is a line in the sand which no one, no matter how mad, should cross. The Church of Jesus Christ with its age old mores, rites and recognition, is one of them.”
