A deadly blow has been dealt the Police Service Commission (PSC), as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, held on Monday, held that its duties did not include the recruitment of police constables.

The court said so while dismissing the suit filed by the commission against the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, over who has the right to recruit the 10,000 police constables ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari to be injected into the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

Justice Iyang Ekwo dismissed the suit brought by the PSC, who had approached the court seeking a pronouncement that it was the statutory body charged with the enlistment of rank and file, also known as constable recruitment in the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, contrary to the PSC the provision of Section 71 of the Police Act, gave the powers to the Nigeria Police Council under the leadership of the IGP to enlist the rank and file into the force.

Stating that he found nothing in the documentary evidence placed before the court by the PSC to support its claims that the IGP has usurped the powers of the commission in carrying out the enlistment, he held that there was no basis for the suit, asking the court to stop the ongoing recruitment, as the Police Council under the control of the IGP was the statutory body to carry out such an exercise.
