Buhari and Aisha

In what could be interpreted as throwing his weight behind his wife, Aisha, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, announced seven aides for the office of the First Lady, breaking yet another vow, as he seems to have come to the reality of the vagaries of office.

The President, who had before now vowed not fund the office of the First Lady, forcing his wife to go by the tag of Wife of the President, until recently when she fully assumed the standard title, made the announcement on the heels of the bitter feud that blew open in the last days in the home of the nation’s first family.

The wife of President Muhammadu, had been caught in a web of intrigues over a video that went viral in the wake of rumours that her husband was scheduled to marry a new wife, where she was seen blowing her tops, over an a not too clear issue, at that time.

But, it later appeared, after she confirmed its authenticity that she was vexed for being locked out from one of the apartments at the Villa, where her son, Yusuf, then recuperating from a motorcycle accident was allocated.

On the heels of Aisha’s confirmation of the video, its maker, Fatima Mamman Daura, daughter of Mamman Daura, the President’s senior nephew and a power broker at the Presidency, gave a full interview, in apparent move to defend herself over the incident.

Amid the controversy, Nigerians, who felt appalled by the audacity of the Daura family for being so frontal in their confrontation with the First Lady, had called on the President to stand with his wife and prove that she could not be toyed with.

The current appointment, where the President approved Dr. Mairo Almakura, wife of former Nasarawa governor as a special assistant to Aisha, the First Lady, is seen in some quarters as a direct positive response to the call.

To work with Al-Makura, who will serve as Special Assistant on African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM), are five other staff, including, Muhammed Albishir, Special Assistant on Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Wole Aboderin, Special Assistant on Non-Governmental Organisations, and Aiyu Abdullahi, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.

Other appointees, were Zainab Kazeem, Special Assistant on Domestic and Social Events, and Funke Adesiyan, as Personal Assistant on Domestic and Social Events

All the appointments take immediate effect, according to a statement by Suleiman Haruna, Director of Information to the First Lady.
