Buhari and Atiku

The Court of Appeal sitting as the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), will tomorrow, September 11, 2019 determine whether President Muhammadu Buhari would remain in office or his challenger, Atiku Abubakar, would kiss his ambition to be Nigeria's number one citizen goodbye.

The tribunal, has indicated that it would give its verdict in the highly explosive case on the same day and have asked parties and other stakeholders to be sitted before 9am.

Both Atiku who is challenging the victory of the President in the February 23 presidential election and Buhari, as well as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), concluded their case last month with written addresses before the tribunal.

Apart from the validity of the outcome from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which declared Buhari the winner, Atiku and the PDP are also challenging the President's eligibility to contest the election, on the ground that he did not possess the minimum West African Examination Council (WAEC) certificate.

On its part the President and APC camp is claiming that Atiku is equally not qualified, for not being born a citizen of Nigeria as his part of Adamawa State, was not part of Nigeria at the time he was born, and therefore not qualified as a Nigerian in the eyes of the law to enable him contest the election.

All these are expected to be resolved by the Tribunal.
