From Germany: Kanu not more Igbo than Ekweremadu, IPOB doesn't have superior ideas

Ekweremadu under attack

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), does not own the Igbo neither is its leadership and members more qualified to be Igbo than other Igbo people across the world, Ozofor Ogechukwu, leader of Ndigbo in Germany, said on Monday.

He therefore said the attempt to arrogate to themselves the authority and power to decide what happens in Igbo land to the exclusion of other ideas, was misplaced.

Ogechukwu, told BBC that last Saturday’s attack on former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, in Nuremberg, was a dangerous trend that could split Ndigbo and lead to dire consequences, adding that the lawmaker was actually in the city, not only for the New Yam festival, but to share ideas on how to develop Igbo land.

“What happened on that day, as we say, is uglier than the vulture and more pungent than the smelly rat. We were the ones who invited him to come as we showcased our culture to the world through the iri ji (new yam festival). The idea was to invite him so that we could brainstorm and see how the Igbo people that are already well-rooted here could liaise with those at home to develop our homeland through, science, technology and engineering.

“We were also looking at how we could set up some industries in Igboland so that some of the companies here would establish in our place and commence production. That was why we invited him as the highest ranking Igbo politician in recent times.

“To buttress our position, on Friday, a day before the event, he had met with a group of high-level German industrialists. On Saturday, also, he met with a similar group. But coming to the main event, we never knew that some of our brothers had something else in mind, as we were all waiting for him in great anticipation and happiness. He was equally in high spirits as he alighted from his vehicle, apparently due to the success of his earlier meetings.

“It was at that time that the blocked him and started pushing him, asking him to go back; that there was nothing to celebrate, as Igbo people were being killed everywhere. Incidentally, he told them, their complaints constituted one of the major reasons of his trip so that solutions could be found together. But, because they had a hidden agenda, they remained implacable.

“Before we knew what was happening, they had started throwing eggs at him as they pushed harder. His attempt to escape into the venue, where people were already standing up in respect after his presence were announced was unsuccessful as he was pushed back, while those in the hall remained oblivious of what was going on around them.

“Incidentally, the policemen we had invited, and who were patrolling the arena, had just left five minutes earlier to return, when the incident happened. The Mayor of the city and Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, had come in from Berlin, to tell you about the quality of the event.”

Though he acknowledged that the police in the country, like their counterparts in other European countries and indeed the West, had great respect for human rights and freedom of expression, they were also very thorough in conducting investigations and would surely get at the root of the matter.

Hear him: “We’ve briefed them. In fact, I’m just coming out of a meeting from them and presently going home. As I told you, they have a way of doing their own thing. But I can assure you, there is nothing hidden that will be unveiled, if not today, tomorrow.

“It’s a pity that the same people who are complaining are not taking into account individual efforts. Every Igbo person knows what Ekweremadu has done to defend them. What they have done is sacrilegious. They’ve committed sacrilege, because the occasion is iri ji, which is held high in every Igbo community. Another is that a visitor you invite to your house enjoys all the security and comfort you can offer.

“But, in this case, against all norms and culture, you disgraced him, beat him up and tore his clothes. I have nothing to say. Let’s watch the outcome. We continued with our ceremonies. Our women danced, the masquerades displayed and everything ended well to depict that darkness has no power over light.

“What I want to say is that all Igbo are equal. Nobody is more Igbo than the other. It’s misconception and wrong notion for IPOB to believe that they are the only ones that are concerned about the plight of the Igbo. Everyone must now stand up to declare their stand. We must stand up to ensure that some people who think and act like children do not cause crisis in Igboland and destroy the Igbo way of doing things. Our elders say what a child stands up to see, the adult sitting has already seen.

“We must rise and denounce this new idea of violence, hate speech, character assassination, general insult to everybody. We must tell these people that these things are alien to the Igbo people. There are so many great Igbo people in Germany, very highly-placed people. Our brothers at home must realise that collaboration is the best way to achieve great things. IPOB must restrained, and made to realise that they don’t have monopoly to violence. This thing could lead to a situation brothers will start killing themselves.

“They must listen to alternative ideas, especially from experts. Our own will not be different and we are not the only ones that want independence. Some people have travelled this route before. Some went about it the wrong way and didn’t get anywhere, while others did it the right way and succeeded.

“There are even those that got independence, but are regretting, because their conditions are worse than before. Igboland is blessed with intelligent and knowledgeable people. Let us follow their advice.
