The Shi'ite protest

Sporadic gunshots were heard in parts of Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital, as members of the Islamic Movement, (IMN), spilled into the street for a second day of protest, after Tuesday's version, where police claimed some of their personnel were shot by members of the religious group at the National Assembly.

Like the NASS protest, which sent jitters at the nation's main legislative complex, leading to the shutting of its doors, the group, known as Shi'ite Muslems, returned to the streets to continue their protest against the continued detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Many social posts warned citizens to steer clear of highbrow areas like the Federal Secretariat and the National Mosque where the activities of the religious group members were quite noticeable, reporting steady gunshot noise, while the police, which seemed to have been taken unawares on Tuesday, was very much on duty this time, firing tear gas canisters to scare away the protesters, while carrying out massive arrests in several vehicles and trucks.

On Tuesday, several vehicles were damaged while five policemen were injured during a similar clash at the national assembly, while about 40 suspects were reportedly arrested in connection with the Tuesday incident.

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had immediately placed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command and those in adjourning states on red alert, while ordering prompt commencement of trial of the suspects arrested in the incident, which the FCT police spokesman, Mr. Anjuguri Manzah, said had been carried out to the letter.
