The late Asempena

A female banker, has reportedly taken her own life, days to submission of her certificate to her employers for verification in an exersise said to involve all workers of the bank.

Agnes Asempana, a GCB Bank Limited staff with the Nsawam branch who committed suicide, is suspected by her family to have killed herself in her room on Friday, 5th July 2019, due to issues regarding her certificate.

According to the report circulating on social media, the newly constituted GCB bank board has directed all GCB workers to submit their certificates specifically, their Secondary School Certificate (Now Senior High) for verification.

The claim attributed to some family members believe that was what pushed the young lady over the edge since she feared to lose her job for one reason or the other.

The body of the former banker, was discovered hanging in her bedroom in her two-bedroom apartment at Suhum with a nylon rope fastened around her neck on Friday, 5th July 2019.

The body of the deceased, who had sought permission to return home and pick an item she had left behind during working hours, only for her to go and hang herself, was discovered in the evening of the same day around 4:00 Pm by her brother identified as Bajerisong Lazarus who paid her visit.

Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSP Ebenezer Tetteh confirming the news revealed that there are no external marks which would immediately suggest a foul play in the incident, but they are not ruling anything out yet.

GCB Bank Ltd, her employers, said it was saddened by the incident, but described her as a contract staff assigned to them through The Capital Group Limited an employment agency contracted by the Bank to provide employment services.
“She was posted to Suhum Branch and subsequently assigned to Nsawam Hospital for Hospital Cash Collections for and on behalf of the Bank. The Bank is unable to comment on the reason for her alleged suicide. However, by the nature of her employment, it is not likely that she was and could ever have been slated for termination by the Bank as is being speculated by some media houses.

“The GCB family mourns her death together with her family and wishes to state that there is the need to eschew speculations until the Police complete its investigations. We, therefore, appeal to the media and the general public to be circumspect in whatever they publish in respect of Agnes’s demise. We express our utmost sympathy to the bereaved family and pray God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this loss,” the bank, said.
