Whatever compromise the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) struck with its All Progressives Congress (APC), to back Ahmed Lawan as the Senate President, collapsed, Tuesday, as its candidate, Ike Ekweremadu failed woefully to retain his Deputy Senate President seat.

It all happened on the floor of the upper legislative chambers of the National Assembly, where Omo-Agege, a Senator from Delta State, scored  69 votes while Ekweremadu polled 38 votes to win the second leadership position of the National Assembly., gathered that some APC negotiators, had offered an Ahmad-Ekweremadu compromise, at a time it was believed that the PDP was going to back Senator Ali Ndume from Borno State against his Yobe counterpart.

It was on this basis that the opposition was said to have withdrawn the support and gave overwhelming votes to Lawan, originally chosen by the APC apparatchik.

But events appears to show that the APC had other plans, as they failed to keep to their own end of the bargain, in the same fashion the Alliance for Democracy (AD), governors, were given a bloody nose, during a similar bargain with the PDP, in the time of President Olusegun Obasanjo, when the then ruling party allegedly renaged on an agreement and swept the entire South West states, outside Lagos.

Omo-Agege, a staunch supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, became prominent, when some thugs allegedly loyal to him, snatched the mace of the Senate, during proceedings in the Senate in 2018.

In a veiled reference to the event, Ekweremadu, while addressing members-elect, before the voting, told his colleagues to be wary of electing a mace snatcher, recalling that he was actually presiding over the Senate on the day the symbol of authority of the National Assembly, was snatched.

He was nominated by Enugu-North lawmaker-elect, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, and supported by Rose Okoh of Cross-River North.

He asked his colleagues not to encourage injustice and illegality and vote their conscience.
