Exactly after eight days in detention, social rights crusader, Deji Adeyanju, has finally greeted the air of freedom, after being granted bail on Thursday by the Magistrate Court sitting in Abuja.

Adeyanju, was arrested by the police in Abuja, during a protest to seek the police neutrality during the 2019 election and was clamped into police detention, and quickly re-arrested after his release, on Monday.

On Thursday, he was brought before Idiat Akanni, who held that the offence of "cyberstalking, inciting disturbance and criminal defamation," for which he was charged, was a bailable.

Akanni, while granting bail, however ordered that he produced two sureties, who must not be less than Grade 12 in the civil service with N500,000 in like sum.

On hand to support Adeyanju, Convener of Concerned Nigerians, were former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode and Charles Oputa popularly known as Charlee Boy, among others.

The offence is punishable under Section 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24(1) of the CyberCrime Prohibition and Protection Act 2015.

Idiat Akanni, the presiding magistrate, said the offence is bailable, noting that Adeyanju should not have been kept in custody.

Adeyanju was rearrested on Monday December 3, 2018 after he was initially released from prison by the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS) on offences bordering on "cyberstalking, inciting disturbance and criminal defamation".
