Dino

Was it mere drama or ritual to demobilise evil forces? This was the question on many lips, as the irascible Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, pulled off another stunt at the Senate on Wednesday, cleaning the seat of Senate President with a white handkerchief, before he could sit on it.

It was another display, reminiscent of the drama more than a decade ago, when former Senate President, the late Chuba Okadigbo informed some stunned members that the Senate mace, the symbol of authority of the Red Chamber, was resting somewhere in a shrine in his home Ogbunike, Anambra State and being guarded by a huge python.

In a show depicting that Saraki’s seat, could have been decked with some fetish elements, Dino, who would go ahead to address the Senate President, who had been under fire since he defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as “My Irremovable Senate President,” carried out the stunt in the full glare of his colleagues, some of whom appeared quite amused.

Quite surprisingly, the fireball which had been heating and expected to explode at the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly, with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ordering the party’s caucus to remove Saraki for dumping the party, appears to have virtually gone cold.

Instead of the war Nigerians expected, a strange sort of conviviality now plays out, as members appear to have shunned that route and settled for peace, apparently having met behind the scene ahead of resumption.

Surprisingly, Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, who had been the arrowhead of the scheme to remove Saraki, was the one who moved the motion for adjournment of plenary on Tuesday instead of that of Saraki’s impeachment, after the institution resumed sitting after close to three months.

Dino, was quoted by some reports to have admitted that he undertook the cleaning of the Senate President’s seat as a ritual to wipe off whatever “juju” that his enemies might have placed on it.
