Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has raised an alarming angle to what the political future of the oil-rich state will be as Nigeria goes to election next year, part of which is that there would be no governorship election there at the same time with the others.

He said on Tuesday that the move not to hold the election, was part of the Federal Government’s plot to take control of the state by all means which had been the dream of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a long time.

The plot, according to him, was to cause a lot of crises during the period leading to the election, such that there would be confusion and serious security concerns, which would make it impossible for elections, thus, leading to a postponement.

This, the governor, who admitted he had insiders within the APC-controlled central government, who were sympathetic to his plight and was therefore forewarning him, said, was to enable the full weight of the entire security apparatuses of the government to be deployed to the state to ensure that it is taken away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and chase him away from power.

“Let me tell you of their plot. There will be no governorship election in Rivers State in 2019. Their plan is to create so many crises such that there will be so much confusion that will give them the excuse to postpone the election. By the time elections hold in the rest of the country, they will now deploy all the security operatives to Rivers to rig the governorship election. We are already aware of this plan.

“There is nothing that they are planning that we don’t know. Is there anything that I have told you that they will do that did not come to pass? They will do it and damn the consequences, because they don’t care,” Wike, said on Channels Television, where he appeared as a guest on the popular breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily.

He said, part of the plot also, would be to promote the current Commissioner of Police in the state to Assistant Inspector General (AIG), promote the current Deputy Commissioner (DC) in charge of operations to take over as Commissioner and move the current Commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), to take over as Assistant Commissioner in charge of operations.

Wike also wants Nigerians to know that it was only in Rivers that an Assistant Commissioner of Police would be in charge of the SARS, daring anybody doubting his assertion to mention any other state, where that was the case.

It was also on a day the governor, admitted to sending away men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who had tried to investigate the financial operations of the state, on the ground that the agency had no such powers being a federal agency to inquire into how states used their own money.

“You should know the pattern of this government. They don’t care. I said here that the SARS commander would be made an Assistant Commissioner of Police. He is the only one in the whole of the country that will head the SARS as an Assistant Commissioner of Police. Mention another one and which area. Mention any other state, where the Assistant Commissioner of Police is heading SARS,” he said.

His words: “With all due respect, we should act according to the law. If you say that for the past three years, we withdrew so, so amount of money, so what? Assuming, though not conceding, the money is Rivers State’s funds. Look, Nigeria is operating a federal system of government. Money comes every month and at the end of the month, we go and share the money. Federal Government takes one Naira, and Rivers State takes five Kobo, Federal Government does what it decides to do with its own money and my state, we have collected five Kobo, will also do with what we want to do with our own money. Now, the Federal Government is telling me, no, I will supervise how you spend your five Kobo.

“This state challenged it and said under the law, you have no power to supervise how I spend the money. The only people that have the power to supervise me is the state assembly. That is the constitution. They are the one that can question me and even say, we’re not satisfied with the explanation you have given, we want to invite so, so agency to look into it. And the court agreed with us. That decision has not been set aside.”
