Akpabio

Former Minority Leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has laughed off talks that he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) to avoid a planned onslaught against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying nothing could be farther than the truth.

He said he left the party, for sundry reasons, particularly the heroic welcome given to former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who left its fold to join the APC, only to return, after ensuring that it lost the 2015 presidential election, which led to its ultimate destruction.

Akpabio, who highlighted his position, Wednesday on Channels Television political programme, Politics Today, said he could not imagine that people who destroyed the party, some years back, could receive such a red-carpet treatment to the detriment of those who remained steadfast and toiled for the party.

Hear him: “For some of us that have stayed with the party and toiled with the party, there was no reward system at all. I can’t imagine people who destroyed the party in 2015 just merely signifying their intention to return to the party and then we roll out the drums and with so much pomp and pageantry we now celebrate them as heroes of democracy and not destroyers of democracy. They say they are back, I wonder what they are coming to do in the party.”

Debunking the allegation that he was the arrowhead of the recent crisis in the Senate, leading to Tuesday’s siege at the National Assembly by men of the Department of State Services (DSS), because of his ambition to be Senate President, Akpabio, said he had no such ambition.

“I don’t have any intention of becoming Senate President today. But I have the intention of becoming whatever God wants me to be. My name is Godswill and I believe in the will of God.

“During my campaign, consistently, I told the good people of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria, ‘Let God’s will be done.’ I believe so much in the will of God and the will of man.

Akpabio, who was a former governor of Akwa-Ibom State under the PDP, said some of the reasons behind his defection to the APC was that the PDP had no ‘reward system for members who toiled for the party.’

“The Chairman of PDP is shocked, he thinks I am moving against the tide but I am not. The problem with my erstwhile party, the PDP, is that they didn’t have a reward system.

It was on the same day the former governor told his audience at Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium where he defected to the APC from the PDP that he was not scared of the EFCC, because the agency had nothing against him.

His words: “Some people are saying I moved to APC because a gun was pointed on my head. A young man wrote a petition against me and the petition was filled with lies… I have never been charged to court… The EFCC did not find anything on me.

“For those who said I am a traitor, I will never be a traitor. Those who are ganging up to stop the government of the day, we won’t see election if we follow them. We won’t see February 2019.

“This is the end of the PDP, not only in Akwa Ibom State, but the entire Niger Delta. We are here to move Nigeria forward with President Muhammadu Buhari who is a man of integrity and a nationalist. Our people should be part and parcel of Nigeria. We don’t believe in segregation. The region as a minority cannot stand on its own,” he said.

“The south-south having the major resources of this country should also partake in the sharing of the resources. What I have done today is to take the people of the south-south to the centre; to link Akwa Ibom to the centre.

“As I speak to you now, those who are from the national assembly are all here. Thousands of you all were in PDP yesterday, are you not in APC today? I accept this broom to sweep away poverty form your life.”
