Snake charmers

It is getting more dramatic out there, as every attempt is now being made to arrest the snake, which reportedly swallowed a whopping N36million belonging to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), in order to retrieve the money.

It was for this purpose that Senator Shehu Sani, who represents Kaduna Central Senatorial District, stormed the Bwari, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, headquarters of the establishment on Tuesday, accompanied by with snake charmers.

The Senator, told the palpably bemused officials of the agency that he was on hand to get to the root of the mystery and was intent on getting the snake which swallowed the N36million from the JAMB office in Makurdi, Benue, vomit it.

His words: “I believe that the contribution I can make is to bring snake charmers from my constituency to the JAMB office and to help them fish out the snake and weed out snakes from their premises.

“The reason for my presence here is in response to the story that a snake swallowed about N36 million. It is my concern that such a huge amount of money is reported to have been swallowed by a snake. I believe the contribution I can make is to bring snake charmers from my constituency to the JAMB office to help them fish out the snake or weed out snakes from their premises,” Mr. Sani said.

“If a snake can actually swallow N36 million one day we may wake up in this country to see that a snake has swallowed our foreign reserve or it has swallowed money that was gathered in the TSA.”

One of the snake charmers, Tasiu Abdulrasheed, who claimed to have been a professional snake charmer for up to 20 years, said he has never encountered a money-swallowing reptile.

“I inherited the skill from my grandfather and I’ve been doing it for up to 20 years. I have dealt with different types of snakes, including pythons, cobra and others, but I have never captured a snake that swallowed money. My master has at different times captured snakes that swallowed various kinds of animals but he has never caught one that swallowed money,” he said.

JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, was said to have gone into a fit of laughter when the lawmaker presented him with two packs of anti-snake venom and offered the services of two snake charmers to fish out snakes that swallowed huge amount of money, preferring to take pictures with the items.

But, JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the JAMB board was dealing with more “frivolous story.”

He said: “There was even a case in Nasarawa when a staff claimed that on his way to come and submit the scratch card, he had an accident and the car got burnt with the scratch cards,” he said.

“The cards have numbers and when we checked we found out that those cards were used. There was another staff that said his signature was forged. He agreed that it was his signature but he wasn’t the one that signed and did not collect the scratch cards. We have many issues like that but all of them have been queried, they appeared before the disciplinary committee, they were interrogated. A report has been written. Once that report has been approved, we will be commended for their dismissal and prosecution.”

“We are not ashamed of whatever because Nigerians are turning it into a joke. It’s not a joke. We should be surprised and we should weep for this country that people could be that mischievous. The effrontery of someone saying a snake could swallow money is something that should disturb us.

“I believe that my contribution to JAMB will help them fish out snakes within the office.

“Even if it is a spiritual matter, we believe that these people I brought, they are some of the best snake charmers in the country and they will help in arresting both physical and spiritual snakes if there has been any in the JAMB office.”

Nigerians had woken up last week to hear the strange story of how a snake allegedly slithered into the Makurdi, Benue State office of JAMB and swallowed the said money, which was the proceeds of the sale of scratch cards to students into the various higher institutions, last year.

Philomena Chieshe, a sales clerk in the JAMB office, Makurdi, who revealed the strange incident, to the JAMB registrar and his team, had while denying that she stole the said money, claimed that her housemaid connived with another JAMB staff to spiritually invoke some snakes that swallowed the money from the vault in the account office.
