Buhari, Masari mourn as ex-Kastina Gov dies

A former military governor of Katsina state, Colonel John Yahaya Madaki is dead.
Madaki was born in Gurara local government area of Niger state, and was Katsina governor from December 1989 to January 1992.
The deceased was commanding officer of the 123 Guards Battalion at Ikeja during the 1985 coup which brought General Ibrahim Babangida to power, and also helped the coup plotters achieve success in the exercise.
Before retiring as a colonel, Madaki returned for two more tours of duty as commander, after handing over to the civilian governor in January 1992.
In May 2001, he was appointed chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Before his death, he was an influential member of the Catholic Church and a holder of the Order of St. Gregory (KSG) awarded by the Pope in 2009.
The Katsina state governor, Aminu Masari, has expressed sadness over the development. In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on media, Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, the governor stated that Madaki was a gallant officer and gentleman who was totally committed to the military institution and any duty assigned to him.
Masari stated that his death would reverberate beyond his military constituency.
Also, President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the government and people of Niger State on the death of a former Governor of Katsina State, Col. John Yahaya Madaki, on Monday.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President extended his condolences to professional colleagues, family and friends of the deceased, who retired after serving the country as a former military governor, Commanding Officer of the 123 Guards Battalion and Commandant of the Brigade of Guards.
The statement read in part, “The President extols Madaki’s courageous and meritorious service to the nation, which continued after his retirement from the army, taking up responsibilities as Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission, and Special Adviser on Security to the FCT.
“President Buhari believes Madaki’s contribution to the development of the nation will always be remembered and appreciated by posterity.
“The President prays that the almighty God will receive the soul of the departed, and comfort his family.”
