Zikora, receiving his mandate

The saying that a gold fish has no hiding place, has probably become so overused that it seems now a mere cliché. Yet, it comes handy every time its full essence and meaning are required simply for want of a better expression.

That certainly is the case on Thursday, when Osaeloka Zikora, the effervescent, deep, erudite and versatile journalist, stepped forward to take his place amongst scores of others for yet another assignment in his ever-rising and active career that has seen him high above many of his contemporaries in terms of achievements in many respects.

Though he trained as a journalist, and later became a well-sought-after broadcaster and public speaker, he has been able to transcend beyond the confines of the profession to diverse areas, resulting in what could be captured as continuous excellence in versatility.

Such is his epitomic resourcefulness that he was actually in the US applying himself to an international assignment, when his appointment approved by President Muhammadu Buhari as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, was announced by Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

Last Thursday, he stepped forward to shake the hands of the Minister, and receive the instrument of power to oversee the affairs of the institution. Naturally, this has opened a new vista in which is encrypted the direct national call to play a key role in the nation’s demanding knowledge industry.

Needless to say, that this particular mission will not impact on the direct beneficiaries only, which is the institution and the students, but Nigeria and even the world as whole, given the proven fact that the new world today is governed by ideas, in which education plays a central role.

Already, in his usual knack to adapt to the ever-changing life trajectory, he seems to be gearing to go. In so doing, he has found expression in the pronouncements of the Minister, who, while inaugurating the new Governing Councils, of the entire Federal Polytechnics in the country, on that Thursday, in Abuja, urged the members to drive the quest for knowledge economy.

Adamu, had enjoined the Councils to drive the polytechnics in the quest to shift from the focus on certificates acquisition to skills acquisition and from the production model to mechanization and capital intensity. “The responsibility of providing Nigeria’s large young population with the knowledge and skills needed by the labour market rests on you.” While congratulating the Council members on their appointment, he cautioned them to judiciously apply the institutions resources to add value and efficiency to outputs.

Latching on this riot act, Zikora, while expressing appreciation to the Minister for finding him fit for the position, and to the President for approving the appointment, said: “I see this opportunity as a call to duty to serve my country and do my best to further the policies and lofty goals of Mr President and his government in education as ably driven by Hon. Minister Adamu Adamu. I am persuaded to work to promote the vision and mission of the polytechnic to train skilful, knowledgeable, industrious and technological manpower for sustainable national development.”
