Ozigbo, hosts, go to God

Valentine Ozigbo, is very confident that he will not only secure the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but win next year’s governorship election, to become the fifth governor of the state since the return of democratic government 21 years ago.

He tells anyone that cares to listen that if it is by consensus, he would pick up the ticket of his party and when the Anambra electorates file out on Election Day, he would be their choice.

Reason: He believes that the momentum is with him and that every bit of the indices favours him, even in the minefield of political uncertainty, particularly in the state.

In a recent parley with reporters, he explained that he had secured a groundswell of buy-in from the robust Anambra political environment both at the grassroots and the top echelon of the polity, as people see in him a governor that would run a people-centred - people-driven government through consultations, collaboration, concord and accord.

Perhaps, for those still doubting, a demonstrable evidence of where his confidence derives, manifested on Sunday, July 5, when Rebuild Nigeria Initiative (RNI) one of the most profound and critical block not only in the PDP, but Anambra politics, threw in with him, choosing him above all the candidates eying the party’s ticket.

The political group known for its massive grassroots structure in all 21 local government areas of the state, was said to have thrown its weight behind him at a meeting held in the home of its leader and former Anambra Chairman of the PDP, Chief Frank Oramulu, in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Ozigbo until a few months ago, the President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc, had come to his hosts with a basket-full of thanks for holding on to their turf at the grassroots to ensure that the party, remained on ground.

He told them how he drew inspiration from the likes of Nnamdi Azikiwe and Michael Okpara, whom he described as great leaders who massively transformed the fortunes of Igboland during their time, making it the envy of the world.

“If those men could achieve what they did in their time, more could be achieved now that technology and knowledge had advanced. In our own time, we have also seen the giant strides of our former Governor, Peter Obi. We have seen what he achieved in the area of human capacity building, his giant strides in education, healthcare, and infrastructural development, which, engendered the social and economic transformation of Anambra.

“All of these and more are achievable now more than ever if we prioritise competence in leadership.”

He maintained that he was particularly impressed on how the former governor employed the template of prudent leadership, not only to make a lot of infrastructural inroads in the state but left one of the rarest legacies hardly seen anywhere else in the recent political firmament, referring to the huge savings in raw cash for the future generation of the state adding that this became more germane, because it came at a time his counterparts left their states in huge deficits.

“With every sense of humility, my intention for seeking elective office is to demonstrate the unlimited possibilities that can become a reality when the right people with the right heart get into public office,” he said, promising to partner with group in his bid to build state.

As it appeared, he was ostensibly preaching to the converted, as each of those who responded were quite emphatic about their support for him for the benefit of the people.

Chief Maga Leo Obi-Okpala, Chairman of Coordinators of Rebuild Nigeria, while expressing his trust in Ozigbo, cautioned against disharmony in the party, while stating his belief that he (Ozigbo) was one candidate capable of returning PDP to the Anambra State Government House.

Echoing Obi-Okpala’s words, Ben Mgbike promised that the Rebuild Nigeria Group would work tirelessly to ensure the victory of the man many have dubbed a "Politician without baggage."

On his part, Honorable Tim Egboka regretted that Anambra had been stagnant, expressing his hope that Ozigbo would be the one to reinstate Anambra as the Light of The Nation.

Valentine Ayika, who accompanied Ozigbo to the event, described the PDP leading aspirant as a man of peace, excellence, and humility.

He enjoined the people of Anambra not to engage in politics of blackmail, propaganda, and name-calling, noting that Ozigbo did not represent politics of acrimony.

Other dignitaries in attendance included: Hon. Tony Offiah, Mr. Izuchukwu Oraelosi, Mr. Chinedu Oformata, Mr. Innocent Ụgwọ, Mrs. Chinenye Okongwu (State Women's leader of Rebuild Nigeria), Mr. Orji Ademola (Rebuild Nigeria Youth leader), Prof. Celestine Ugwumba, Hon. Afam Okparauzegbu.

Ceteris paribus (All Things Being Equal), the PDP, which last held power in the state in 2006, might be singing the victory song once again through Ozigbo. For those who believe that things have gone awry and Anambra has returned to the era of the locusts, this might be the chance at redemption.
