The Federal Government must do everything to end the current debilitating fuel crisis across the country, because it is a huge embarrassment not only on his government, but to Nigeria as a whole.

This is the conclusion of the United Progressives Party (UPP), as it reviewed the situation of the country in the year that is about to end in just a few hours and made projections for the coming 2018, with a message for the people to continue to remain steadfast and hold governments at all levels accountable.

The party, in a statement personally signed by its founder and National Chairman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, to wish them a happy New Year, however, enjoined Nigerians to continue thanking God for making it possible for them to survive the year, given all the troubles they had to endure in 2017.

The statement said: “We give glory to God for His grace and preservation throughout the turbulent 2017. It was a tough year for Nigerians and our frail democracy. God in His infinite mercy saw us through this perilous time in the annals of the nation’s history. As 2018 beckons, our hopes and aspirations are renewed for greater service to God and the fatherland.

“It is time for sober reflection on the multifarious challenges that bedevil our nation and proffer solutions to them. It is time for action. It is time to articulate and execute people – oriented projects in the interest of the longsuffering masses. Nigerians endured the harsh economic recession with equanimity trusting that
Government at all levels will provide dividends of democracy that will lessen their burdens as promised during their campaigns for offices.

“The current fuel scarcity is a national embarrassment that has made life unbearable for the common man. The Federal Government should take urgent step to supply petroleum products and alleviate the suffering
of the people. This is in accordance with section 14 (2)b of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) which provides that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

“It is time to provide strong progressive leadership that will foster love, peace and unity in the country. As a mass movement, UPP is strongly determined to give direction and leadership in progressive governance of the nation in consonance with the symbol/logo of the party which is the Tiger Head. The tiger is known for integrity,
boldness and courage. We shall reflect these sterling qualities in our intervention on critical national issues.

“The forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States on 14th July and 22nd September, 2018 respectively will determine the Independent National Electoral Commission’s readiness to conduct the
2019 general elections. The need for the commission to start early preparation for the general election cannot be over emphasised. This is to avoid the charade called Anambra State Governorship election in November 2017. We urge Nigerians to be vigilant and protect their votes in future elections to ensure that every vote is counted and counts in the overall result.

“We should march into 2018 with the courage of a tiger and do exploits in our various vocations, occupations and professions.  Happy New Year!”
