Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has charged Corps members to maintain peace and discipline during their mandatory 10-month service period.

Barrister Dalung gave the charge following reports of an alleged clash between soldiers and Christian corps members at Karaye Local Government area of Kano state.

The Minister said that he received a first hand report from the Camp Coordinator,  Alhaji Ladan Baba who debunked the purported clashes also between the the para military and the corps members.

According to the coordinator, the attention of the Management of NYSC was drawn to news reports between a group of corps members and the Camp Commandant, Capt. Anyaegbunam during the ongoing 2017 Batch 'B' Orientation Course in Karaye.

He said the face off started when some corps members were disciplined for loitering within the camp premises while a social activity was going on.

Baba said that some group of corps members started chanting solidarity songs to release the erring members who were serving a punishment which erupted in a rowdy session. The situation, he said, was immediately brought under control.

"I promised to interface with the Camp Commandant to ensure that punishment and reward for Corps members are handled in line with the provision of the NYSC Byelaw," the Camp Coordinator stated.

However, the Minister has called on all Corps members to remain law abiding citizens and eschew actions capable of deriding the scheme and bringing it to disrepute.

"Obedience is the first law in heaven and you must abide by the rules while in camp. If you are unable to take part in camp activities due to ill health or otherwise, there are appropriate channels to report to and get an exemption.

"The NYSC under the Ministry of Youth and Sports will continue to do all in its capacity to create a conducive environment for all corps members during orientation camping and otherwise. We have also improved on facilities for Corps members' health care by making provisions for health checks, drugs and referrals to bigger medical facilities.

"Your allowances are also paid as and at when due so we urge you to remain disciplined while in service and form networks and partnerships that will help you after service, Dalung said.
