Nwobodo

I’m old enough to know what I want. The Catholic Church filled a gap in my life at a crucial time.

These were the words with which former Governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, dismissed strong overtures to return to the Anglican Church, which he left in 2015, after being in its fold all his previous life and even built the church in his community single-handed, as governor.

The governor brushed all these records aside and at best, said it was a matter that should be left for another day, adding “when we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it.”

It was on Sunday, a day the Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Arch-Bishop Emmanuel Olisa Chukwuma, used every word to try to lure the former governor back to the fold after conferring on him the Outstanding Leadership Award of the Church.

Emphasising the reason for his decision to leave the Anglican Church, after the controversy that erupted in his community during the burial of his late son, Ifeanyi Nwobodo, the former governor, who had even gone as far as remarrying his wife in his new church, explained it was the Catholic Church that stood behind him at the time it mattered most.

Chukwuma, who led two other Anglican bishops to the celebration of 100 years of the and thanksgiving of Christianity at St. Mathew Anglican Church of Amechi at Awkunanaw, had gone down memory lane to remind Nwobodo how, as a governor, he single-handed built the church in 1982, in furtherance of what his own father, Pa Peter Nwobodo to enhance its growth.

Hear him: “Those stealing Peter’s son should leave him. Peter should be happy that the seat he left in the church has been recovered by the son today. Peter was one of the pillars of the church at Amechi and left it for his son, Jim. Jim took up the challenge and built the church single-handedly. His father, Peter, will be happy today in his grave as his son is back in the fold.

“You are a baptised and confirmed Anglican. These Catholic priests, who accompanied you to this occasion, should bid you bye, because you are not going back to Catholic again with them.

“You should not be confused; don’t allow them to confuse you. We need you among us. I know all the time that you will be back, and you are back today.”
