President Muhammadu Buhari, has washed his hands of the issue of the whereabouts of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying those who guaranteed his bail from the Justice Binta Murtala Nyako Federal High Court, Abuja, should be made to account for him.

The position of the President, was conveyed by his spokesman, Garuba Shehu, while speaking extensively on Wednesday’s proscription of the organisation as a terrorist organisation by the Federal Government.

Shehu, who spoke on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, said it would be wrong for inquiries of where the IPOB leader is to either the President or any other institution of government.

Explaining why the government wielded the big stick, in proscribing the group, he said it had all the trappings of a terrorist organisation, by not only preaching hate, but going ahead to procure the instruments that would forcefully separate a part of Nigeria, such as calling for arms, forming an army, printing of Biafran passports and Biafran currencies.

He said that it was actually for this reason that the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), was not given a similar treatment, because it chose to carry out its agitations within the ambits of the law.

His words: “The question is those who are agitating, how far off the mark have they being. For instance, if you look at the South East, there is also MASSOB, which is agitating for Biafra. MASSOB hasn’t taken to violence. MASSOB hasn’t printed currencies or formed an army of pseudo-army. Therefore, there is a difference. That’s why government has not proscribed MASSOB, because, so far, they have been able to operate within the ambits of the law.”

While noting that some other groups agitating for self-determination, he argued that virtually all of them had toned down their pronouncements and amended their positions, after listening to the leaderships of their various areas, which was not the case with Kanu.

“In the case of Kanu’s IPOB, it is on record that they have shut themselves completely out contacts with the governors from the region and Senators from the region. So, who else is there to talk to. They are clearly not interested in any form of dialogue with anyone,” he said.

On the likelihood of security operatives branding innocent people from the South East as IPOB members and maltreating them, he said the only measure to guard against that was to appeal to them to be professional and circumspect in carrying out their operations.

His words: Our expectation is that our law enforcement must conduct themselves with the highest respect for human rights. There must be no form of generalisation as far as the operations of the armed forces are concerned. There must be proof of evidence for anybody to be so branded. I think there are good reasons to be concerned that innocent persons can be ruffled up on the wrong assumptions that they are IPOB members, when they are not. “We’ll call on the security agencies to exercise the highest level of caution and to ensure that the rights of citizens are respected.”
