Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has cried out about a stealth move by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), to get the necessary approval of the courts to declared the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a terrorist organisation.

Already, there are fears in the South East of a dangerous agenda, being pursued by some powerful forces to decimate the area and cause great grief to the people and that a successful designation of the organisation with such a tag would endanger lives, as it could give the security operatives, especially the military the leeway to unleash mayhem against them, especially the youths, who could easily be declared IPOB members.

The video, which went viral in the traditional and social media, of some soldiers torturing some youths, who were being flogged and made to swim in muddy waters, would be a child's play to what would become the faith of the people, if this happens, fears in some informed quarters indicate.

Obviously to guide against this, the apex Igbo umbrella body of Igbo organisation, while raising the alarm of the alleged secret move by the Federal Government, urged courts in Nigeria not to allow themselves be used to undermine democratic process by granting frivolous orders against the group.

A statement issued by the group on Monday night and signed by the President General, Chief Nnia Nwodo  said that the body had “credible intelligence that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Alhaji Abubakar Malami, has secretly approached courts to obtain an order to designate IPOB as a terrorist group.”

Nwodo, himself a lawyer, maintained that such move was not only illegal but aimed at furthering the harassment and intimidation of Igbo youths who have been pursuing their constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human rights.

He said the body had also despatched letters to courts to be weary of such spurious moves as it is capable of aggravating the frayed nerves and disrupting the genuine moves Ohanaeze and critical Igbo leaders are making to bring peace and concord in the land.
