The first commercially available flying car has been unveiled in Monaco, but if you want to get your hands on one, it'll set you back a whopping £1million.

AeroMobil said its teardrop-like shaped AeroMobil Flying Car, displayed at the Top Marques Monaco, would be available to the public by 2020.

The petrol-powered superman-car can take off using a grassy or paved runway just a few hundred metres long.

It can also be used to speed along earthbound roads, whilst drivers will be able to fold in the wings to squeeze it into ordinary parking spaces.

At the show on Thursday, the company revealed its first successful model, which could switch to flight mode in less than three minutes, is now available for pre-order.

The company, one of several developing such flying vehicles, aims to make up to 500 units of its first commercially available edition, priced at £1million to £1.2 million.

To fly, the car would need an airfield or another approved place to take off, while owners would require driving and pilot licenses, AeroMobil Chief Communications Officer Stefan Vadocz said.

AeroMobil said deliveries to customers of the flying car, which Vadocz said would comply with air and road regulations, was expected to start by 2020.

Before so-called flying cars become mainstream, they must overcome a host of flight safety issues to allay public fears.

Governments are already studying how to regulate drones and driverless cars, while the auto and aviation industries are working on advances in software and city planning to ensure the vehicles are restricted to travel within safe corridors.

“Today is a transformative day for the future of travel as the launch of the AeroMobil means and that everyday flying transportation will soon be a reality,” said Juraj Vaculik, co-founder and CEO of AeroMobil at the launch event on Thursday.

“To get to this point has seen us bring together a strong team of the best minds and experts in cutting edge automotive, motorsport and aerospace to redefine the boundaries of what is possible in transportation.

"From today we are ready to take the first pre-orders and we are honoured His Serene Highness the Prince of Monaco will unveil the AeroMobil today at the Top Marques Autoshow.

“To significantly reduce the cost of flying cars in the long-term, we are bringing an automotive high-volume approach to a traditionally conservative low-volume aerospace industry, significantly cutting components costs via smart design, novel materials and production automation whilst fully conforming with civil aviation industry requirements”

A family flying car is in the pipeline but with no firm release date.
