Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris

The high rate of robbery and kidnapping incidents in Edo State, claimed another victim Thursday, few months after 82 years old Justice Grace Omogui was shot and killed in Benin., gathered that Suleiman Afegbua, former Chairman of Etsako East Local Government, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers along Benin-Auchi express way.

Three of his brothers, who were traveling with him on their way to Benin, were also snatched by the armed men, in the dare-devil operation, according to family sources.

The kidnappers were said to have shot him dead and made away with some vehicles carrying his brothers. “The incident happened just a stone-throw to a police checkpoint. The kidnappers shot almost 10 minutes, according to one my cousins who drove the jeep. Yesterday, there was similar incident at the same spot. They wounded several persons,” a relative of the deceased, said.

The late Afegbua

Acknowledging the incident on his Facebook, brother of the deceased, Kassim Afegbua, former spokesman for both former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida and later, the immediate past Governor of Edo State State, Adams Oshohmole, took to his Facebook page to confirm the incident.

He wrote: “The world appears crumbling at my feet. Lost my mum two weeks ago and the painful hands of death snatched my brother Prince Suleiman Afegbua.

“He was shot dead by gun-wielding men along Ekpoma - Benin road this morning. It struck me like a dream, coming like rivulets, sounding so unreal yet true, with a devastating poison filtering through my veins. “It still looks unreal to me. It strikes me like I am in a dream world. But I saw Suleiman's body being lowered into mother earth, in a final journey of no return. A journey that remains a permanent feature in every mortal. A journey that defines the bridge of life. A bridge we all must cross one way or the other. “Suleiman was a true brother; rugged in his political encounters, dogged in his determination and strong-willed in his effort to make an impact.

“He was playful but serious. He was jovial and likeable. He was there for everyone. As a Local Government Chairman, one thing that gladdens my heart was his sense of focus. “Typical of every Afegbua, politics was in his blood, as well as his blood being in politics. He drank from politics. He slept in politics. His political excursions are steeped in love for community and not of self.

“He was there for the youths, the elderly and the aged. When he walks the streets, the shout of his name and title would rent the air; chair! Chair!!, chair na chair, bubbling with smiles and laughter even at the height of provocation.
“The assailants may have killed him, but they haven't killed his dream. His dream of a better society. His dream of being there for everyone. His dream of adding value to governance. His dream of accountable representation. His achievements will speak for him.

“His footprints will serve as footnotes of his sojourn here on mother earth. My heart is still wailing and it will wail for a long time. Not when I cannot see Suleiman again. Not when I won't hear his voice to ask what's happening back at home.

“Those who mauled him with gunshots have surely taken his sins away. They have cleansed his soul. And surely, he will find eternal rest in the hereafter. No matter how they tried to hide, the long arms of the Law and the Lord will surely catch up with them. “SULEIMAN, REST IN PEACE. WE LOVE YOU. AFEGBUAS ARE UNITED FOR YOU. WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE UNITED NO MATTER THE INTIMIDATION.”
