Okada operators

Rather than the blanket ban on commercial motorcycle operators, which has become the new penchant for state governors in Nigeria, the operators should be trained to obey traffic rules and adherence to safety, Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, said on Tuesday.

He cautioned during the celebration of the national day of Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), in Abuja that Nigerians depended a lot on the operators for ease of transportation.

On Monday, Lagos State government indicated that it would crush 40,000 motorcycles belonging to the operators, among other measures meant to clamp down on the very popular means of transportation in the state.

“I don’t think we should ban Okada because if we do, it will affect the economy; they only need to be trained to obey rules and regulations. The issue of security, safety and regulation should be dealt with at the state level; state governments should train Okada riders.

“We know you play a vital role in the economy. Not all buses, taxis can access our roads for agricultural purposes; a lot of Nigerians depend on you because your services are cheap.

“The economy cannot only grow through white collar jobs; everybody doesn’t need to depend on government and what you have done is to be self-employed to feed yourselves.’’

National President of ACOMORAN, Shehu Babangida, who gave indication that the organisation, now had 12million, said the day was an annual event designed to celebrate the informal sector in Nigeria, adding that the coming of the operation, had grossly reduced the rate of unemployment in the country.
