Governor Ayo Fayose, may have started facing his first real test from President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, he has found a penchant for constantly criticising, with a reported travel ban slammed on him by security operatives.

Report from Nigerian Times, an online newspaper, says it appears the outspoken Ekiti State Governor, could have been placed on Security Watch-list, quoting feelers from security circles.

It said the order, which came via a signal signed and issued three weeks ago from the Directorate of Security Enforcement of the Department of State Services (DSS), in Abuja to all the entry and departure points in the country, was specific that Fayose would be prevented by security operatives from boarding an aircraft, ship or vehicle with intent to travel out of the country.

The caveat in the signal says that he should “see the Director-General of the Service in Abuja” to clarify some issues bordering on his travel arrangements. If this happens, he would be the first sitting governor to have been so placed on the list, the paper reported, on Sunday.

No reason was given for the possible ban, but apart from verbal criticism of the President, the Ekiti State Governor, had upped the ante recently, when he submitted a letter to the Chinese embassy in Abuja and took a copy to China, at the same time the President travelled to the country to seek economic aide, with the aim of stopping the world economic giant from granting Nigeria a $2billion that was in the offering at that time.

The Nigerian Times report, said it failed to get a confirmation of the development from the governor, because his spokesman, Lere Olayinka, could not be reached on telephone but, quoted an official in the Ekiti State government house, as describing the placing of the governor on the list as “fascist”.

The source, according to the paper said: “You can only get this from a government that is afraid of its shadows. What does the governor do other than to critique the federal government vis-à-vis some of the president’s actions that are not pro-people, and these are all aimed at a better bargain for all Nigerians.

“Some people, especially some appointees of the President most times behave as if they love this country more than others. Is it by saying that pump price of N145 for a litre of petrol is too high that makes him a security risk or appealing to Abuja to call the rampaging herdsmen to order? What has Governor Fayose said and done that the then governors of the APC-controlled states never did to former President Goodluck Jonathan and the man tolerated and accommodated all of them? Who was gagged? Whose movements were restricted?

“Anyway, Governor Fayose has no immediate need to travel out of the country but when there is that need to travel, he will. They cannot trample on his freedom, part of which is movement. Are they indirectly withdrawing his immunity while others are enjoying it? When we get to the bridge, we shall cross it. But we can’t be second class citizens in this country.”

However, a source in Abuja said the security agencies could have been uncomfortable with the governor’s trips that coincide with the President’s scheduled visits to the same country, readily making reference to China where President Buhari and Governor Fayose visited at the same time “shopping for investments.”
