48 years after: I’m the father of Edith’s son, Musa – Gowon

After 48 years of denying his love-child, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has finally accepted paternity for Musa Yakubu Gowon, whom he fathered with the late Nigerian socialite, Edith Ike-Mark Odu.

It was a long wait, but after it all, Musa would now have someone to proudly call father without let or hindrance, almost five decades after. 

Gowon had denied up to the Supreme Court, where a bitter dispute that started from the lower courts rose to, but finally capitulated to a DNA result, which confirmed that he was indeed the father of the 48-year old son.

But, that was all he could reveal, in a statement he issued on Wednesday to that effect, as he would want the public, not to pry further into the matter, but respect the privacy of the family and that of the boy, whom he acknowledged, had suffered a lot in the past years.


The younger Gowon, apparently bearing the brunt of his travails of being denied the love and identity of a father, had found himself in a United States jail, on a 27-year term, for allegedly importing heroin into the country, but was released recently on compassionate grounds, having been found to be of good behaviour.

The turn of events, is likely to seal the entire saga, for the man, said to have in fact, studied hard during his confinement through which he earned a degree, before his release in November, 2015 after serving 23 of his 27-year term.

Nonetheless, he would be doing so without the mother, who stood with him all the way through the paternity struggle, which was actually settled at the apex court in her favour, but could not be consummated because of Musa’s travails.

The former Public Relations Manager of Guinness Nigeria PLC, eventually succumbed to a long battle with cancer in 2003, about 12 years before her sons release and another year before the end of the battle, which was sealed by a statement issued by the former number one citizen himself, in a statement, acknowledging what he had denied for almost five decades.

The terse statement read: “Following years of doubts and speculation, a DNA test was recently conducted to ascertain the paternity of Musa Gown, who recently returned to the country. The result of the tests were conclusive and they confirm his paternity. We, the family, are working to assist in his rehabilitation, following a very difficult period in his life. As we look forward to the future with faith in God, we request that our privacy be respected.”
