Beneficiaries of the Supreme Court judgement from the Ejike Oguebego faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, will have to wait a little bit longer to know whether they would be admitted into the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly.

This is because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is returning to the same apex court to get a mandate on what to do in the face of what it assumes is a conflicting position of the court on the same matter.

The commission is confused that the same court, which had since held that only the national body of a political party could send a list of its candidates to it, had now held that the list presented by the PDP apparatchik should be discountenanced in place of that of the Oguebego camp, operating at the state level, that was not empowered to conduct primaries.

But until that is done, Chief Chris Uba, John Emeka and Annie Okonkwo, who have since stormed the commission demanding that they be issued with certificates of return on the basis of the Supreme Court verdict, would not succeed in their bid.

The commission, which did not speak on the fate of Okonkwo, who is seeking to take over the position of Iyom Uche Ekwunife, earlier sacked by the Court of Appeal, but insists it would not readily remove the duo of Mrs. Stella Odua, in place of Emeka and Mr. Andy Uba, in place of his brother, Chris.

If they are in a hurry, the commission has advised them to approach the authorities of the NASS with the judgement and get them to swear them in, as the law empowered them to do so, after seven days of obtaining such a judgement.

Director, Voter Education, INEC, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, who conveyed the position the commission, Thursday on Nigeria Television Authority breakfast programme, Good Morning Nigeria, said the commission was fully obeying the latest pronouncement of the apex court in recognising the Oguebego camp, but was hamstrung in handing over the certificate of returns to members of his group by the earlier position.

“We have been meeting on this situation and we decided that the best option open to us is to approach the Supreme Court to clarify its position. But if they are in a hurry, the law allows them to take the judgement to the National Assembly and ask that they be sworn-in,” he said.
