Admist the controversies trailing the emergence of National Assembly leaders, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow the legislators choose their leaders in a democratic manner warning that leadership of the National Assembly was not a one party affair.

NANS in a statement on Sunday signed by its President, Tijani Usman explained that the party's interest in choosing who becomes Senate President and Speaker without allowing the legislators to decide those with impeccable credentials to lead was suspicious.

It would be recalled that APC had on Saturday organised a mock election to elect consensus candidates for the positions of Senate President, Speaker and their deputies but the mock polls ended in disagreement as some legislators boycotted the exercise.

Consequently, NANS warns that the seeming disagreement is a sign that if the differences amongst the APC legislators are not quickly resolved democratically, the party may be distracted from the start in delivering the huge campaign promises it made.

The statement reads in part, "Nigerians are in a hurry to witness the change promised by the APC, and it should not allow itself to be entangled in issues that do not portend well for the polity.

"The party must desist forthwith trying to have overbearing influence on legislature including choosing its leaders. Let Senators and Members be allowed to elect their leaders in a free and transparent process.
Agreed, the APC are majority but other political parties too have a say in who emergences, therefore,  let the process be devoid of interferences from political parties", NANS stated.
