The alleged failure of the 19 All Progressive Congress (APC), lawmakers in Ekiti State to secure the deployment of soldiers, may have stalled their move to storm the state in a bid to continue their impeachment scheme against the state Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose.

Whirlwindnews.com, learnt that President Mohammadu Buhari could not be bothered with the agenda, as he was intent on making good his inaugural day speech not to favour any particular interest.

The G-19, were said to have been banking on the support of the President, who is a member of the party to order soldiers to take over the Ekiti State House of Assembly, where the impeachment plot is supposed to be hatched and provide the needed security buffer, which the police might not be able to provide.

They were said to have hoped that with the exit of former President, Goodluck Jonathan, who could not provide such a backing due to party affiliation, Fayose would be an easy picking, especially as he is believed not to be in good standing with the new President as a result of alleged hate campaigns in the run to the presidential election.

But, amid serious tension, the group, said to be enjoying the backing of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a sworn enemy of the Ekiti Governor, who had engineered his impeachment during his first tenure, were said to have met a cold shoulder in their attempt to secure the support of Abuja.

Regardless, tension still mounted in Ado Ekiti metropolis on Monday, as Fayose and his supporters still feared the worst, while police, intent on maintaining the peace took charge of the entire Assembly complex in anticipation of the suffusing rumour of the intention of the lawmakers to storm the state.

Armed to the teeth, the policemen cordoned off all the roads leading to the Assembly and prevented everybody from gaining access to the complex situated close to the state secretariat.

In addition to ground officers and men, several patrol vans were positioned at each strategic junction leading to the complex, while a fierce looking policemen in another Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) in front of the Assembly complimented combat-ready anti-riot who policemen keenly watched every part of the complex.

Fayose’s supporters were also on hand to boost the police efforts, as they took charge in other locations, such as the NTA Road and other areas around the secretariat, which they barricaded with the help of motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada riders and many artisans in the state, known to have given the governor his popular grassroots support.
Reacting to the situation, Fayose, told reporters that there was no reason for the group to continue their agitation since they had all been paid their entitlements as contained in the spirit of a meeting last week Monday, in Akure, Ondo state, where a truce was reached for cessation of hostilities.
Debunking the allegation by the G-19 Speaker, Adewale Omirin that they had not been paid, Fayose who displayed some of the cheques as evidence, said it would amount to illegality for the group to continue with any impeachment proceeding against him in view of the ruling delivered by Justice E.S. Chukwu of the Federal High Court, which ordered that status quo as at April 23 be maintained pending the determination of the motion on notice.

“They came to collect the cheques in Ado Ekiti in company of the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Toyin Ojo. The issue would have been discussed publicly during the peace parley, but they insisted that it should not be discussed openly because they didn’t want the leaders of their party to know,” he said.

Confirming the Buhari angle, the Governor, who described the entire scheming as illegal, said there was no way Omirin should be asking to be restored to his position, having accepted that he had been impeached by withdrawing his case in court.

His words: “They have been dropping the name of President Muhammadu Buhari as giving them the backing to impeach me. How can an Assembly, whose tenure will wind up on Thursday be planning this? I wonder why the issue of the past should be allowed to come to play now.

“As at the date the court gave the order, I mean April 23, Hon. Adewale Omirin was not the speaker. It will be wrong for the court order not to be respected. This is illegality and I want to raise this
for the public to know.

“Omirin has gone to Court to challenge his impeachment and later withdrew such, which means he accepted he had been impeached and a cost of N100, 000 was awarded against him.

“So, he is not the Speaker. I am calling on well-meaning Nigerians, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Mahmoud and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in this matter.

“How can somebody be living in another State and planning to invade his own state, this is something else and I view this as a major crime anyone can commit against his people”, Fayose said.

Fayose urged Ekiti people to be prepared by keeping eyes on the lawmakers and prevent them from carrying out their alleged nefarious act.
