Former governor of Enugu State, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, has filed a petition challenging the declaration of the incumbent, Sen. Gilbert Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the winner of the March 28 senatorial election conducted in Enugu East zone.

Nnamani contested the election on the platform of the People for Democratic Change, PDC.

Chairman of the PDC in Enugu State, Comrade Sunday Ani, who made the party’s position known, said Nnamani had formally petitioned the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu to challenge the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The party chairman said the election was characterised by widespread irregularities.

Ani said, “On 28th of March 2015, the good people of Enugu East Senatorial District turned out en masse to perform their civic duty.

“You cast your votes overwhelmingly for the candidate of our party, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, to represent you in the Senate.

“However, to your shock and disbelief, another candidate was announced as the winner.

“The announcement provoked mass protests in Enugu, as well as ceaseless visits, telephone calls and messages to our party office and candidate.

“Against this background, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani accepted the responsibility to reclaim the mandate, and this he has done by petitioning the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.”

He expressed confidence “that justice will be done in God’s time,” and urged the party’s supporters to “remain calm and continue to trust in God.”
